この作品ほどに豪壮かつ華麗なコンサート・エチュードが他にあるだろうか。両手オクターヴと、鋭い和音のコントラストが、勇ましく、どこかユーモラスな騎士を描き出す(A)。直後のクロス・リズムの部分(B)は、ショパンの練習曲 Op.25-11 (木枯らし)と同じ音形・リズムだが、アルカンは1小節毎に左手が高音域にまで跳躍するという派手な手の交差も組み合わせ、絶大な効果をあげている。その後、へ長調の部分(C)からはアルカンお気に入りのテクニックである両手での和音交互打鍵が数ページにわたって続く中から、美しいメロディ (p, et bien chante) が浮かび上がる。変ニ長調での(A )、ニ長調の(C)を経て、主調の変ロに復帰。(A)と(B)があらゆる要素を増強して再現される。分厚い和音の交互打鍵、跳躍の幅を増加、左右の手の役割の急速な交代 (右手を低音部に飛ばす) ユニゾンで鍵盤を一気に駆け降りるスケールと超絶技巧の限りを尽くし、2ページ全て両手オクターヴが鍵盤の隅々へ飛び回る壮絶なコーダに至る。コーダには「最後まででペダル」の指示があり、ピアノ全体を振動させながらひたすら音量を増大して終わる。この唖然とする演奏効果のほどは、ぜひそれぞれの耳でお確かめいただきたい。

　Is there any other concert etude as grandiose and brilliant as this one? The contrast between the two-handed octaves and the sharp chords creates a brave and somewhat humorous knight (A). The cross-rhythm section immediately following (B) has the same shape and rhythm as Chopin's Exercise Op.25-11 (Withering Wood), but Alkan also combines a flamboyant hand-crossing, with the left hand leaping to a higher register every bar, to great effect. Then, from the F major section (C), a beautiful melody (p, et bien chante) emerges from several pages of alternating chords in both hands, Alkan's favorite technique. After (A ) in D-flat major and (C) in D major, we return to the main key, B-flat. (A) and (B) are reproduced with all the elements enhanced. Alternating thick chords, increased leaps, rapid changes in the roles of the left and right hands (with the right hand flying to the bass clef), scales that run all the way down the keyboard in unison, and all manner of superb technicalities culminate in a spectacular coda in which octaves of both hands fly around the keyboard in every corner of the two-page work. The coda ends with an instruction to "pedal by the end," and the entire piano vibrates as the volume continues to increase. The effect of this stunned performance is something to behold with your own ears.
